A high-quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity, and all pupils should be taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. (National Curriculum 2014)

At Myrtle Park we seek to provide an education in which children develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. Our children will be encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave and analyse their findings. It is also vitally important that children develop a secure understanding of each key block of knowledge and concepts in order to progress to the next stage.

We aim to provide a curriculum where children;

  • develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics.
  • develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
  • are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future

The main changes that have taken place to the new curriculum are the inclusion of evolution and inheritance, digestion, fossil formation, the digestive system, gears, levers and pulleys and a greater emphasis on identifying and classifying plants and animals. An important change is that the range of science enquiry is increased to include much more than fair testing; with children now required to observe over time, identify and classify, seek for patterns, and research using secondary sources in order to answer scientific questions about the world around them. This is a really excellent move that reflects Myrtle Park’s current good practice.

At Myrtle Park we are excited at the prospect of delivering the new curriculum that is stimulating and exciting to all our learners. Our learning is applied through real life situations and hands on experiences that develop skills for life and create happy memories.
